GCRF Living Deltas Hub, Newcastle University: communications strategy review
GCRF Living Deltas Hub, Newcastle University Communications Strategy Review
In March 2021, the GCRF Living Deltas Hub at Newcastle University asked Pickle Jar Communications to carry out a review of their proposed communications strategy.
We were asked to review the existing draft communications strategy and provide recommendations.
We were also commissioned to review other communications such as:
Newsletters
Website
Socials
Promotional leaflets
The aim of this work was to highlight areas for improvement as well as suggest working practices to assist delivery. We also highlighted gaps and opportunities for further work that might support communications in the future.
Review of current strategies and communications channels
In order to understand the issues faced by GCRF Living Deltas Hub we undertook desk research. This saw us analysing the existing strategies and documentation as well as understanding the content pushed through other media and channels.
We were tasked with ascertaining what was working and what needed further development. We also looked at the challenges that they were facing, such as:
Disparate communications networks across different continents
Conflicting needs from communications
Difficulty obtaining content to support communications
Recommendations report
We provided a written report that outlined key issues and recommended actions. Unusually, the report considered not just the draft communications strategy but other areas where the focus of the communications could be improved.
We considered the following areas in our report:
Best practice in structuring a communications strategy
How to communicate strategy
Understanding audiences not just for the communications themselves but for the strategy too
Recommendations for additional audience research such as influence mapping
Clarity on channel plans and what was needed for each
Managing stakeholders and content providers
Delivery and workflow
